How can I work with a shared work folder?
Top  Previous  Next

It's recommended to use a per-user work folder as this method provides each user with a "sandbox" in which to perform and test changes. However, in special situations you may choose to use a shared work folder.

If you choose to use a shared work folder for the project, make sure to set the Use shared work folder option in the project Properties to NTFS Permissions or Windows Permissions.

When using a shared work folder, you should expect the following RCS statuses:

Files w/o a lock:
- Archived for all users.

Files with a lock but not modified yet:
- Locked for the locker.
- Blocked for all other users.

Files locked and modified:
- Modified for the locker.
- Modified (Unlocked) for all other users. (This status means: "The file is not locked by you but has been modified.")

Notes:
·When the Use shared work folder option is set to NTFS Permissions, CS-RCS uses NTFS security features to grant edit permission only to the user that checked-out the document, however, some Windows file-servers don't support these security features. On these servers, all users might be able to edit an exclusively locked document.
·For proper setting of NTFS security features, all users checking-out files must be listed in the directory Owners list. Please see the next FAQ for details.
·CS-RCS supports a "Shadow" folder feature. With this feature you can define a network folder (or FTP folder) that will always hold the latest revision of the project for reference.
